With the increasing price of real estate, many people are downsizing and with that comes smaller yards. Yard decor can be difficult to plan out, and having a small yard creates even more difficulty. As your South Florida landscape designer, we take outdoor spaces very seriously, so we have provided you with some tips for making a small yard look larger than it actually is.
If you have a particularly small space, you should utilize every bit of it – this includes the vertical space. Add some shelving in your yard or hang planters on a surrounding fence or wall. This will create the illusion that your backyard is much bigger than it actually is, while adding some more greenery!
The best way to make any space appear larger is by adding light to it. In a yard, the best light you can utilize is sunlight. Allow some sunlight to pour in for a more open feel. To make even more of the sunlight that is coming into your yard, add some hanging mirrors. Mirrors will double the sunlight, while serving as great decor.
If your yard is all one level, chances are it could use some additional levels and textures. Using different levels and textures will differentiate the area and make it seem larger. We recommend using textures like wood, stonework, and grass.
Potted plants are especially great when you do not have much, or any, soil to dig into. Potted plants also allow you to mix colors, shapes and sizes, while utilizing vertical space.
Do not constrain yourself with big, blocky furniture in your small space. If anything, add a small table with a couple chairs, but use the rest of the space as an opportunity to add plants and other vegetation.

Depending on your landscape needs, you might want to vary the height of your hedge or privacy screen to make it more visually interesting. That means choosing trees and shrubs of different heights. When you’re looking into shrubs and trees, you’ll also need to consider how much sun and shade they get, as different plants have different needs.
